Today, Royal Public Schools (RPS) celebrated the opening of its first tuition-free, public charter school, Royal Academy of Excellence (RAE), while also commemorating the 100th anniversary of their building serving the Southside of San Antonio as a school.
Community supporters and families enjoyed an official ribbon-cutting ceremony complete with speeches from RAE students and parents, Brackenridge Foundation Board Chair Victoria B. Rico, RAE Principal Rebecca Hines, and RPS Founder Dr. Soner Tarim. Royal students participated through art and science exhibits, music and dance performances, and school tours.
The school and district was also presented with an official City of San Antonio certificate to celebrate the grand opening of the first Royal Public school and commemorate its building’s 100th anniversary of serving the southside of San Antonio as a school presented by District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran. Additionally, a representative from Congressman Henry Cuellar’s office presented a Congressional Certificate of Recognition.
Royal Public Schools is a new college-preparatory public charter school district that opened its first elementary school, Royal Academy of Excellence in San Antonio in August 2021. The charter district was founded by Dr. Soner Tarim, an accomplished education advocate and national leader in STEM education.

Our STREAMS-360 curriculum sparks curiosity and exploration in formative years, which ignites a real love of learning in students that will serve them beyond high school.”
Royal Public Schools utilize a cutting-edge STREAMS-360 curriculum developed by Dr. Tarim to expand the STEM program with reading, writing, the arts and social-emotional learning in a “whole child” approach. The curriculum is unique to Royal Public Schools.
“Our goal is to offer a small, safe, and supportive learning environment where unique electives like Robotics and hands-ons projects bring joy into their school day,” said Principal Rebecca Hines. “Our individualized approach and integration of social and emotional curriculum allows us to truly be a source of support for these students in a way that develops a strong school culture.”
Currently, Royal Academy of Excellence is enrolling students for grades K-5 for the 2022-2023 school year.
