City Celebrates 20 Years of Lady Eco Keeping the San Antonio River Walk Clean

For two decades, Lady Eco has quietly worked behind the scenes to help preserve one of San Antonio’s most recognizable landmarks. This year, the City of San Antonio is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the custom-built ecology sweeper barge that has become an essential part of maintaining the beauty and health of the downtown River Walk.

First launched in 2006, Lady Eco was funded by the vision of the late Lila Cockrell and the San Antonio Parks Foundation. The specialized vessel was designed specifically for the unique layout of the River Walk, providing an environmentally responsible way to remove floating debris while protecting the river’s ecosystem.

Over the past 20 years, Lady Eco has removed more than 4.3 million pounds of debris from the river. Every day, the vessel travels the 3.2-mile downtown River Walk loop, collecting litter, leaves, branches, and storm runoff that naturally accumulate in the water. Its work is especially important after heavy rainfall, when debris from throughout the watershed is carried into the river.

Unlike traditional cleanup equipment, Lady Eco was custom-built to navigate the River Walk’s narrow, winding waterways. The vessel operates using compressed natural gas and compressed air, eliminating the risk of fuel contamination while reducing emissions. Its innovative design includes dual pneumatic sweeping arms with a combined 35-foot wingspan and 12 mesh nets that efficiently collect floating debris before it can accumulate throughout the river.

Each year, Lady Eco removes approximately 115 tons of floating debris, helping protect water quality while preserving the scenic beauty that attracts millions of visitors from around the world.

The vessel works alongside the City’s River Operations team, whose ongoing efforts ensure the River Walk remains clean, safe, and inviting year-round. While visitors often admire the restaurants, shops, public art, and vibrant atmosphere along the river, Lady Eco represents the behind-the-scenes commitment required to keep this iconic destination looking its best.
