The rural parts of San Antonio’s Southside face a significant challenge: the need for libraries for our community youth. Access to print reading materials and limited Wi-Fi availability is necessary for our children’s educational development. We seek your support in the Little Library Literacy Initiative to address this critical issue by installing small libraries at local businesses, organizations, and within our neighborhoods to promote literacy and education.
A National Assessment of Educational Progress study shows that children with access to print reading materials perform better academically and exhibit improved literacy outcomes. However, a recent Department of Education map reveals zero annual circulation of children’s library materials in significant school districts south of Interstate 410, including East Central ISD, Southside ISD, Southwest ISD, and Somerset ISD.
Despite their best efforts, these districts do not offer public library services or summer reading systems. The only official library south of I-410 is the small Elmendorf Community Library, which is run entirely by volunteers and cannot meet the needs of our growing community.
We propose installing “Little Libraries” across the Southside to bridge this gap. These small, mailbox-sized libraries operate on a take-one, leave-one principle, providing free access to books for all community members. We want to place these libraries at local businesses, organizations, and neighborhoods.
By sponsoring the installation and maintenance of these Little Libraries, you will contribute to:
- Improved Literacy Rates: Providing children with access to books will enhance their reading skills and academic performance.
- Educational Equity: Ensuring that all children, regardless of location or economic background, have the necessary resources to succeed.
- Community Engagement: Encouraging community members to take an active role in supporting and maintaining these libraries.
- Long-Term Benefits: Investing in our youth’s education will have positive ripple effects throughout the community, leading to a more educated and prosperous population.
Join us in this vital initiative. Your sponsorship can significantly change the lives of countless children on San Antonio’s Southside. We can create a brighter future by fostering a love for reading and learning in our community.
